I wrote this letter in April 2023, imagining who I might become by 80. If I wrote it today, I think it would sound a little different — but I still treasure it. It’s sweet to look back and see the fruit, the gentle ways I’ve already begun to lean in this direction.

Letter from 80-year-old self to me now

Dear Katelynn,

Have compassion on yourself. Life is long. The process is sometimes slow. Don’t give up. The work is good.

Follow your curiosity. The world is so full of wonder, don’t resist it! Let go of your cynicism. Be delighted and unashamed!

In the end, people are what matter. Don’t let them slip by. Soften your heart toward them. The investment is worth it. In them, you will see Christ.

Plant the seeds of what you want. Wait with expectation and you will see His wonders!

I wonder what your 80-year-old self might say to you today. Is there a voice of compassion waiting in the wings? A word of courage, or delight?
